Some lovely things I found this week

Imagine a train trip through this fairytale train tunnel in Kleven,Ukraine

If you are like me and always make way too much spaghetti, how cute and practical is this measuring tool by Stefán Pétur Sólveigarson?

Did you know that Holly Golightly’s Manhattan brownstone in the Upper East Side is for sale. It can be yours for US$5.85m, but you’ll need to redecorate as it is nowhere near as gorgeous as it was when Audrey lived there.

Check out the Apple Store in the 9e arrondissement in Paris.

What a superb picnic basket by GamFratesi; not so sure how easy it would be to carry though.

If you live in Melbourne, check out this pop-up burrito van at Odessa Creative Space, a hub in which all art forms are fostered: art | fashion | design | photography | film | food | illustration | architecture | media | dance (and burritos!)

Am loving the Nina Ricci Pre-Fall 2012 collection. If you love feminine clothing made out of divine fabrics take a look at these.

Whatever you are doing this weekend I hope it is filled with the people, activities, places and things that fulfil and nourish you.

A Retro Wedding

I normally don’t feature weddings on this blog as I abhor traditional formal ones. This may stem from the time, as a uni student, when I waitressed in one of Melbourne’s grand hotels which was a favourite wedding reception venue. Over the years, I would have seen 500 plus weddings each costing more than an average person’s annual salary, each more grand than the next, but ultimately all the same: cake, dress, decorations, flowers, bridal waltz and, sadly, even speeches.

But, when I stumbled across photos of  Catherine Rogerson and Timothy Johnson’s wedding, I couldn’t resist posting them. They capture everything a wedding should be: relaxed, inmate, personal and, most of all, heartfelt.

The bride wore a 1950s prom dress bought online from Wallflower Vintage located in New York. The classic orange and white Penguin Books covers provided the inspiration for the wedding service programs and how cute is the vintage type-writer encouraging people to type a personal message to the couple.

Congratulations to Catherine Rogerson and Timothy Johnson. It makes me want to get married again.

The Race that Stops the Nation

Today is a public holiday in Melbourne, because of a horse race. I kid you not. It’s referred to as the race that stops the nation. And to some extent this is true: for the three minutes it takes to run the 3.2km or 2 miles race the streets of Melbourne are deserted.

The Melbourne Cup is supposed to be the epitome of glamour and sophistication. It rarely is. That’s why I stay away from the track and focus on the two things for which Cup Day is famous: roses and champagne.

Regardless of where you are in the world, how you are feeling or the season, beautiful flowers and champagne never go astray.

Cup Day Greetings from Melbourne!

This photo of Claudine under the Cherry Blossom in Brooklyn is by Jenna of Sweet Fine Day, currently one of my favourite bloggers. The rawness and authenticity of Jenna’s insights about life, motherhood, work, marriage and being a woman is so refreshing, especially in this day and age of our obsession with celebrities and ‘perfection’. I really recommend checking it out.
