An oldie but a goodie: the pink Manhattan apartment of Betsey Johnson
I once had a metallic pink dining room. It was kinda crazy, but I loved it for a few years and then I needed a break and went crisp white. Every so often I remember that pink dining room and it makes me smile. So, when I stumbled across the Manhattan apartment of fashion designer Betsey Johnson I knew I had to share it here. Originally featured in Elle Decoration UK some four years ago (which is an age in the world of design and fashion) the apartment is still amazing.
What is not to love about the dining room: the Knoll’s Platner Steel Lounge Chairs with their sunflower yellow upholstery providing a stark and refreshing contrast to the candy pink walls, the 1970s starburst chandelier and white and black floral rug?
Similarly, stunning is the use of Louis Poulsen’s PH Snowball pendant light, normally only seen in ultra-modern minimalist spaces.
And while the ultra-feminine decor may not be for everyone it really does typify a home as self-expression. Looking at this apartment it is not surprising that the 70 year old Betsey, who has dressed everyone from Lou Reed to Madonna and Katy Perry, is famous for doing cartwheels down the runway at the end of her shows.
Betsey herself says that when decorating, “Make it personal. I like houses that totally reflect their owners. Take some chances. Try those colors you’ve always loved but were afraid to use. What’s the worst that can happen? You have to start over again? So what? Decorating is fun. And maybe you’ll learn something about yourself in the process.”
